Two wire ungrounded receptacle

Does the code allow GFCI receptacles to be installed to replace a two wire ungrounded receptacle and would it offer sufficient protection?:-?
 
It would offer more protection then the current two wire system but a GFCI device used this way is still not a substitute for grounding.

Not a substitute for grounding,,,,,I'll agree with that.

But is it any less safe than a grounded GFI?
Is it less safe than a grounded 3 prong outlet?

A pretty good argument can be made that a GFI whether it has an EGC run to it or not, provides far superior downstream protection than a mere grounded 3 prong outlet.
