Is a shunt trip breaker allowed for a motor disconnect if the breaker is not within sight but the switch for the shunt trip is within sight.
 
I can't find where that is acceptable in Art 430.102 or 430.109
 
I, for one, would not want that to be considered acceptable. The shunt trip does nothing more than issue a one-time command to the breaker. It cannot prevent the breaker from being manually closed again, after the shunt trip device has caused it to trip. What the maintenance person needs, in order to assure his or her safety, is the ability to see that the breaker is indeed still open, and that no other person is standing close to the breaker with apparent intent to close it.

Other than testing, you have no independent evidence that the trip even occured.
