Copper Clad Aluminum

So, what's the story on copper clad aluminum? I see it a lot in the NEC, but is it ever used? Where? Why?

NEC said:
Copper-Clad Aluminum Conductors. Conductors drawn from a copper-clad aluminum rod with the copper metallurgically bonded to an aluminum core. The copper forms a minimum of 10 percent of the cross-sectional area of a solid conductor or each strand of a stranded conductor.

I haven't seen any other that when I pull it out of an existing installation.

I think the theory behind it is to save money with a mostly aluminum conductor, but not have the oxidation issues with the copper clad.

With modern aluminum, oxidation isn't a problem.
 
Copper clad was common in the early seventies when we were using alumminum romex. It is no longer installed but there is still quite a bit in use.
The copper coating allows the use of normal devices and connectors.

I am not aware of any other applications using copper clad cables.:)
 
When I first started working in this trade in 1973, copper prices were on the rise (sound familiar?) Copper-clad Aluminum romex was commonly used in those days as an alternative to all aluminum conductors.

I do not believe that you can purchase this stuff anymore, but it is still recognized by the Code.
 
I installed it for a Company I worked for in 1973 that was based out of town. I informed them that it was not axcepted in our county but was told I told to mind my own business. They wired 8 units and called for inspection. Wanna guess what I spent the mext three days doing???? I have not seen any since.
