Not sure if I'm posting in the correct area, but I'm sure it'll get moved to the correct place if not. I have seen these devices before, usually on German manufactured equipment. It is a 3 lead device one lead on each leg of the load side of the starter, tucked in behind the starter, and then the 3 leads for the compressor also off each lead. The manual for the chiller is in German, everthing is! the wiring diargram! it shows this device in the diagram in wired in parralle with the compressor. So what is it? And what does it do? I have looked through some electrical manufacture books and have not seen any of these devices or black boxes, but as I said I have seen them before on several occasions mainly on German manufactured equipment.

Thanks before hand,

Dave

Can you give better description or even photo?

Possibly power factor capacitors?

Sorry no photo, camera not allowed in plants. This particular instance it was slightly larger than I have seen in other instances but it was like 2.5" wide, 3" high and like 1.5" deep, it was mounted under the contactor for the compressor. A power factor capacitor? What functionwould this serve in a 3 phase motor? I want to say that i remember in another instance it being called a buffer, still not sure.............

Thanks,

Dave

Don't take offense but you need to learn more about power factor. 3 phase motors is the number one type of equipmnet that the power factor capacitors are used with. Doing a search on this forum may give you enough information to get a fair understanding.
