If these size of boxes are determined by the size of conduit times six plus the size of any conduit in the same row, as per NEC 314.28(A)(2), this article gives the minimum distance between raceway entries enclosing the same conductor. But can we determine the minimum dimencions for left and right, top and bottom, for a box that has two 3 inch conduits on the bottom.

The wall of the box opposite the conduit entries has to be at least 18" away. The wall of the box with the conduit entries must be 18" plus the OD of the conduits plus enough room to install the locknuts and bushings without hitting the side wall.

I thought it was 4.5x? from conductor to conductor = 4" conduit = 18"

The code doesn't care what anyone thinks...

I will allow you some inside knowledge in the essence of what the NEC Code does say...

Charlie's Rule.

It doesn?t say what you think it says, nor what you remember it to have said, nor what you were told that it says, and certainly not what you want it to say, and if by chance you are its author, it doesn?t say what you intended it to say. Then what does it say? It says what it says. So if you want to know what it says, stop trying to remember what it says, and don?t ask anyone else. Go back and read it, and pay attention as though you were reading it for the first time.

Now you know...:)

This is post #7 here on this thread - here is a LINK to Charlies rule, at post #7 on the original thread.

It's not mean if it's true......:)

Can I retract some of my statement ??? Cow has crossed the Rubicon! The right (and probably considered mean) answer will have you sitting out in the cold, and going "What did I say???"

Fortunately for us, Code is not emotional....just the players are :D!

Does that apply to everything?

Even when your wife asks how she looks in a new piece of clothing...?

:D
Yes, even then, but just because it's true (and therefore not mean) is no guarantee you won't be sleeping on the couch for a while. Discretion is indeed the better part of valor. Be to her virtues very kind; be to her faults a little blind.

To the OP, or anyone else that may want to look at the math, look here for the correct answer.

Mike uses the same pic in the article from 2002 in his 2008. The years change, but the formula does not.
