We have 2 metal parking lot pole's ( 35' ) that had to take down as they were rusting apart at the bottom .We are going to replace all our poles with with concrete ones in about 3 or 4 weeks . My boss wants some type of temporary light at these 2 islands . I know when I used to work construction we used to hang 2 incandescent lights 120v in series on 277v .Could we hang 4 - 120v quartz floodlights in series on a 480v circuit ? I know we could do a transformer but this would be only temporary on 4 x 4 poles and no one can reach them ...

Why not just use 277 v quartz lamps?

No, for two reasons.

Firstly, the absolute reason: the 120V fittings are rated for 120V, and the fitting that is nearest the load side has more than 120V hot to ground. Should the lamp fail, then there is 480V between the two ends of the lamp. Of course, you may be able to get a suitable fixture rated at 480V or higher, in which case this reason may be moot.

Secondly, is reliability - series wiring means that one failure will take out several lamps.
