208 volt equipment on 240 supply

I'd appreciate any feedback on what issues would arise from operating three phase 208 volt equipment on single phase 240 volt supply. It exceeds 10% of the tolerance levels that I am aware of, and I made this aware to the used equipment supplier who doesn't seem to consider this a problem. I am thinking if there are electronic controls, they will be damaged or prematurely expire. They do have approved markings, and will be used for a restaurant application.

Most importantly I'd appreciate feedback on whether these circumstances have caused dangerous situations such as fires.

I'm unsure how you will operate 3 phase equipment on single phase (without added equipment).
As far as operating 208 equipment on 240 volt, it is a violation of NEC 110.4. The damage, if any, is certainly Dependant on the type of equipment. Any 120v components should not be affected as either system has 120 to neutral and some motors are not damaged, but, without close scrutiny it would be risky.

Thanks Augie...to elaborate, yes...it's 208 volt rated (not 3 wire) but I was wondering if the components tend to be rated for 250 volt and the supplier knows something I don't, or perhaps a miscommunication...I have put red tape on the equipment, will not hook it up and will e-mail them about the issue.
 
I think this came up a while back. I have installed two machines on 208V that had to be boosted to 240V because the manufacturer required it. You are smart to check with the supplier first before energizing.

That is the opposite situation of his.

I still want to know how a 3 phase equipment is going to run off single phase
 
Only solution besides not using used 208V equipment would be to use buck/boost transformers to buck the voltage down to something more suitable.

You lost me..............
He has a machine that needs 3-ph power, and only has a single phase source. How would Buck/boost xfmr help?

I am aware that he was going the opposite direction. Still, he needs to make sure of his voltage requirements no matter buck/boost, phase converter/no phase converter.
