Hi,

Article 210.8 requires all kitchen countertop receptacles to have GFCI protection. An electrician asked me if the first receptacle only could be GFCI thus protecting all other receps. Intuitively, it makes sense, however, reading the code appears to indicate that either they all shall be GFCI or a GFCI breaker should be used for the branch circuit. Any thoughts?

A single GFCI receptacle at the first outlet can provide GFCI protection for the down stream receptacles and comply with 210.8(A)(6).

The requirement is that certain receptacles have ground fault interrupter protection. The code does not tell us how to provide that protection.

My kitchen has three circuits dedicated to the countertops, and there are a total of six receptacles. Each circuit is first connected to a GFCI receptacle, and each of those has one other receptacle fed from its load terminals. That is one acceptable way to achieve GFCI protection for all countertop receptacles.
