The NEC started requiring all new dryer and range circuits to have independent grounds with the 1996 edition. Before that, one could establish a ground through the neutral if certain conditions were met.

The NEC started requiring all new dryer and range circuits to have independent grounds with the 1996 edition. Before that, one could establish a ground through the neutral if certain conditions were met.

Among those certain conditions was the need to have the grounded conductor be insulated, or be run in SE cable, and originate from the service equipment.

I guess knowing that it is at least in the code now is all that really matters.

Even now I still catch 1 or 2 a year running 3 wire circuits.

There are still people out who think this is a recent new requirement when you tell them that it must be a four wire circuit. Most of them I have run into are not electricians though.
