I do not have my code book with me it is on a job.

What article says that I have to install a GFI service outlet when changing the service. If there wasn't one before.

Many local counties I've worked in have local codes that say at least one GFI shall be installed on all services. (you can't build a 200 amp service with nothing hooked to it.) I just did one last week for two pumping stations, so I had two breakers for pumps and one GFI.

However, several times I've been in the same situation as you,, if you're replacing a service, and there's not a GFI anywhere on the service, he could misapply the local code to that situation.

Definitely one of those "I know it's in the book there somewhere" deals to which I say no you don't know and no it isn't. :D

This old tale comes from the need to install a GFCI in an unfinished basement.
It is not a requirement for a service, it is just any easy place to install it.
