Color of GEC

Does the grounding electrode conductor have to bare or green?
The same for the bonding jumper for metallic piping. I don't see it in the code.

Because its not there. Al tapes them, I usually don't. Pretty obvious what that conductor is.

I haven't, and never actually will, but I often am tempted to mark a GEC orange or purple or some other silly color .

Me too, but a wise electrician told me once "don't confuse the inspector".

I still do... It helps me remember not to stick that #2 under a 20 amp breaker. :grin:

I thought #6 an smaller ,if it have insulation have to be green!!!
4 and larger you can reidentify with no problems. ( green tape or paint )

We are talking about the grounding electrode conductor not the equipment grounding conductor. The code does not specify the need for bare or green coloring. It can be bare or it may be insulated but it does not require marking.

It can be any color other than white or gray.


I think you should go ahead and identify it purple. Keep a camera handy, I want to see the photo.
