Is type CMR cable allowed to be used above a drop ceiling(commercial building) if the area is not being used as environmental air? I've read thru article 800 and I see where it gives the description of each type, but couldn't find anything that specifically states this area. Would this be something that I would need to go to an NFPA standard to find? Thanks much

Yes.

Section 800.154(C) seems at first glance to disallow any type other than CM or CMG, but T800.154(E) shows the allowed substitutions. CMP can be used anywhere, CMR can be used anywhere except air-handling spaces, CM or CMG can be used in most other locations, etc.

So riser type can be used above a ceiling that is not a air-handling space.
