Two elevators (75 HP, FLC=96A each) are being fed via a single protection device (circuit breaker) at panel H through a feeder going to a wire tough which in turn has two branch circuit with their own protection devices each. Each elevator branch circuit protection device is an enclosed circuit breaker sized at (96 x 150% = 144, then go with next size up per exception 1 of NEC 430.52 (C)-1 which translates into a 150A protection device.
How would you size the protection device at the panel H? Per NEC 430.62 (A) and 430.52 (C)-1 I am sizing the breaker at the panel at (150+96=246A, next size down = 225A). Some are arguing that it should be sized using next size up, but this is a feeder and not a branch circuit correct? So exception 1 of 430-52 (C)-1 does not apply. Correct?
