230.54(f) how much wire needs to be left outside of weather head? if i only left about 14" of 1/0 am i screwed. this is my first service. im an apprentice helping my best friend at his house. we measured the 1/0 a little too perfect and we don't have ANY to spare. we barely land on the lugs in the meter with just a little room. and the "drip loop" looks fine to me if all it needs to do is loop down and back up?

My POCO want's 3'.
 
yeah...but what happens if i only leave em' 14 inches? i mean...they won't hook t up? there look to be plenty to splice...and the service mast is only 22" above the roof anyway...

darn. do i need to take it out and go buy new wire.
 
cause in the NEC it doesn't say how much wire to leave. 14" isn't ideal but i've learned my lesson. what is the worst that POCO can do? refuse to hook it up?
 
yeah, well i'd have to go buy 55' of THWN 1/0 which is 1.89/ft. and this stupid job was to help my buddy. so i'd prob be the one to eat it. maybe ill flag a POCO dude tomorrow and just ask em.
 
Leave 6 inches out the weatherhead if you wish and if your POCO is ok with it.

Most cases the guy hooking it up will complian about it, some may hook it up anyway, others are strict and you follow all their rules or no connection.

They generally like to have a little room to help prevent shorting out while connecting to a live drop and I don't blame them.
 
the minumum is 18". i might be closer to that than 14" i originally said. i'll measure the conductor tomorrow and if they are short..i will replace them. darn
