I have done it 100's of times I own 12 meters and keep them connected pretty regularly, I have to rent additional meters occasionally. I will say I have not had to rent a meter for two years and occasional have 2 or 3 idle.

I am located in Ft. Lauderdale Fl. What meter do I buy or where can I get one for rent

Our meter was about $19,000, you can rent the same model on the internet for about $125 per month.

I think Brian has said you can get a low end meter for about $4000.00

Does that include the software to write the report?

I am betting it does but I do not know for sure, it did include four 24" flexible 6000 amp current probes which added a lot to the price.

I know we lost the hasp key for the software and the new one cost us about $400.

Once in a while I call for metering, but usually I just check the utility company records (back 3 years). This is acceptable to our AHJ (BC, Canada) as a method for determining existing loads.
