Is their any code requirement that requires you to support (tie wire) existing 2x2 fixtures. In this application we are taking down existing 2x2 fixtures and reinstalling after new grid installation.

Grid wire is often required by fire marshal for the safety of his men in event of a fire. What I would do is install grid wire and temp raise the fixtures a foot and not unwire them. Simply lower them onto the new grid
