is there typically a distance limitation a combination starter can be remotely located from a motor? I know VFD's have certian distance limitaitons from VFD to motor but what about a standard FVNR combiantion starter? and on a side note what do you prefer thermal overloads or solid state??

I don't have any documentation, but I've seen hundreds and hundreds of feet without a problem.

The longest I ever worked on was about 1700' for a 200 hp well pump on a VFD. There was about 1300' from the VFD to the well and another 400' down the well. I have done a number of motors on starters in the 1000' range.

voltage drop

In these instances unless other wise stated by the vfd manufacturer I have calculated voltage drop and sized the motor leg cable accordingly.I have seen thermal bi-metallic overloads last and work accurately ---once periodically surge tested for over 20 years,i have seen electronic overloads fail, act up erratically and randomly in 4-5 years of use, they do offer a wider spectrum of features, this can be good depending on application
