Just failed an inspection in a pool equipment room. We ran all raceways in Sch 40 PVC. The inspector says it has to be in Sch 80.

The only reason for Sch 80 in my opinion is if the installation was exposed to "physical damage".

What exactly classifies "exposed to physical damage"?

I agree that the only reason to require Sch 80 PVC is if the conduit is exposed to physical damage.

Ask the inspector if he feels the installation is subject to physical damage.

As far as what constitutes physical damage there is no NEC definition so it is up to the AHJ to decide.

Wow, if they consider the conduit runs inside of the pool equipment room as being subject to physical damage, where can we run sch 40 pvc that isn't underground? Unless of course, the pool is 100,000 square feet and they use a forklift to dump the chemicals.:D

Wow, I've wired lots of pool equiptment and never heard that from an inspector. But most pool equiptment locations are kind of out of the way/hidden.
