The listing and manufacturer's instructions may so state, and Article 110-3 (I'm looking at a 1999 book at the moment) could be used as a reference/citation.

I agree 110.3(B) is your reference.

Table 8 lists class B stranding.

Here are a couple articles relating to the subject. It appears that the lugs or connectors will have to be identified for use with the particular stranding.

The UL White Book also supports this.

NFPA 79 - 2007 ed.
Electrical standard for electrical machinery.

"13.1.1.8 Means off retaining conductor strands shall be privided when terminating conductors at devices or terminals that are not equipped with this facility. Solder shall not be used for that purpose."
