i have a couple of questions i thought maybe you could help?
in a warehouse, when using cord and plug for each fixture, 277volt on a 30amp citcuit:
what is the max distance of the cord and plug, i am thinking 6ftbut could
not find it in the code, and what is the smallest gage sj cord allowed?
any help would be helpful

There is no maximum length limit for a cord and plug connected luminaire. 410.62(C) gives you the requirements for cord and plug connecting electric discharge luminaires.

As for the ampacity of the SJ cord check out 400.5.

I agree, no limit on the cord length. But Chris's reference tells us that the outlet has to be directly above the luminarie.
