I am trying to study for my NEC code test, but I am really confused by this book. I am on box fill, and it is talking about device yoke. Can someone explain to me what the yoke is and also if I am interpretting this right, that a single device yoke and a multi device yoke is both counted as 2 for box fill.

The yoke is the steel strap the receptacles are mounted to. A singe rec or switch is the same as a double or duplex. There is another requirement for large rec. Gimme a sec I have a pic somewhere.

Yes taking class and simutaneously going through the Mike Holt NEC Exam Prep book. No one explained what the yoke was.

I've gotten them in there, but had trouble for it later. Had to learn the hard way, or the people teaching me had to.

I disagree with the pics; I've gotten larger receptacles in deep 1g boxes and plaster rings.

Is this the graphic you have a problem with? That hole in the center is for a single gang box. Isn't that still one yoke?

Yes, but...

(4) Device or Equipment Fill. For each yoke or strap con-taining one or more devices or equipment, a double volume allowance in accordance with Table 314.16(B) shall be made for each yoke or strap based on the largest conductor connected to a device(s) or equipment supported by that yoke or strap. A device or utilization equipment wider than a single 50 mm (2 in.) device box as described in Table 314.16(A) shall have double volume allowances provided for each gang required for mounting.
