Not knowing where to post this, I'm posting it here. Does anyone know what this device is? A customer of mine sent it to me, and they said it's above a doorway in their kitchen. Thanks in advance!

It's a mini-candelabra lamp socket in a Despard-type plate hole, probably for a maid call or something similar. Is this a larger house?

looks like a broken Despard indicator light socket.

any hearing impaired people there. maybe used for a door bell once.

why would one need an indicator above the door?

I would think its for a mini lamp to tell them something else is on. Perhaps attic, outside flood, basement, garage etc

Back in the 50's my uncle wired our house and in hallway on the wall was a bank of about 10 lights that did just as i posted above. Was kinda nice added touch.

Ask them if there was a button on the dining room floor, under the head of the table. I see those on old houses around here.
