I've attempted to contact the vendor & manufacturer, but there seems to be a language barrier.
By chance could anyone tell me what size wires are contained in a cable based on the markings. There are 17 black, continually numbered wires and 1 green/ yellow wire. (all the same size, slightly larger than 18AWG).

I'll go ahead and type everything:
TE. CO. TECNIFLEX ? OIL RESISTANT ? CEI 20-22 II ? IEC ? 60332.3A ? O.R. FROR - 18G1 ? Uu/U ? 450/750 V ? K/2006/10 - CE

Thanks!

18G refers to 18 cores, the "G" means that one of these cores is a ground wire, leaving 17 cores for other purposes.
The "1" following 18G is the conductor size, 1mm sqaured.
This is normally rated at about 10 amps, but in an 18 core cable it would be less, unless only a few cores carried current.

I agree with all. 1 mm squared is effectively 17.2 AWG.

Years ago, I determined an equation to determine AWG from the mm squared. In Excel form, if it will help anyone, AWG=17.16-4.312*LN(mm squared)

One can convert from AWG to square mm, the apparent reason to do this is that Americans and the NEC use AWG, whereas Europe uses sq mm.

However, the construction and ratings of the cables is determined by local standards so the tables in the NEC for an AWG cable may not agree with the tables in the Eurpoean regs for an equivalent size square mm cable.

So "how many amps is a 1sq mm cable good for" is a fairly hard question, though "about 10A and be ready to derate for bundling" is a reasonable answer. If for no other reason that in Europe one expects a 10A circuit to deliver 10A continuously if required, whereas the NEC would have you considering what to do if the ciruit operates for over three hours.
