How do you check a photocell

I was wondering if any one knows how to check a photocell right out of the package without power?

What are you trying to check? Whether it closes when exposed to adequate light?

Most you can't check without powering.

A photo cell is normaly closed without power so you will have contonuity between black and red.
Apply power and enough light there is a time delay in most once the time delay passes the black and red will open

The resistance between black and white will change as you cover/expose the cell. Directing a laser at will change the reading as well.
