1 HP motor, 120 volts, single phase. table 430.248 says to use 16 amps for my FLC
16 x 125% = 20 amps. In table 310.16 can I use a #14 because motors fall in 240.(G) ? We are still in the 2005. Thanks

You can go much more on the breaker if you need to for start load . See table 430.52 , we are allowed to do this because motors have overload and thermal protection which will break the circuit .
