Has anyone run across this situation?

KSB (manufacturer) submersible sewage pumps are supplied
with Prysmian PROTOMONT NSSH?U flexible cables. These cables
do not have a UL or other NRTL listing. NEC 501 requires
cables to be ?listed for extra-hard usage?. This would mean
that the cable type would be SOW or SOOW. The pump motors
are FM listed, but the listing covers only the motor, not the cord.
The pumps are in a CassI Div1 location.
These pumps are currently installed in pump stations
all over the US so I am wondering if anyone else has run across this.

How do you know that the FM listing does not include the cord supplied as part of the motor? If the listing covers the entire assembly, there is no special need for a mark on the cord itself.

in any case, there are other types of cable than the ones you mentioned that are listed for extra hard usage.

Bob, attached is the FM listing file. It does not include the cord. The FM testing does include the cable entry which is a potted arrangement.

IMO, when the cable is factory potted, it is part of the motor/pump assembly and therefore part of the listing.

FWIW, I've attached the technical data for the cable...

Smart$ are you saying that 501.140(B)(1)"be of a type listed for extra-hard usage"
does not apply?

In a sense, yes. You are not installing and connecting it to the motor. The cable is part of the equipment. You can only control connection to the supply end, and perhaps the wiring method, such as running it in conduit where it would otherwise be exposed and using a cable gland/seal as appropriate.

However, this cable is subject to the approval of the equipment assembly as a whole by the ahj.
