Does anyone see a problem with the following?

This is in a water heater closet. The white pipe is a flue for a water heater.

I don't if that keyless is a G-4 base fixture that wont allow an incandescent?

you know those two pin twist lock type keyless.

I can see where there could be a big danger if an incandescent is put in there, not so much for a fire, but if that pipe ever melted through, you could have a bad carbon monoxide problem that could go un-noticed, which would not be good.

CYA, people proof this one.

From the photo, it looks like the lampholder will accept a standard incandescant.

Maybe something like the Leviton 9862-PC is available?

If lamp is accidently left on could be serious problem. But not sure you have a violation as this is not a clothes closet and that pipe is not a shelf. I have never vented gas so not sure if PVC is even legal. For safety I would change it to a $3 jelly jar

1. It can't physically touch the pipe, otherwise it couldn't have been screwed in/out.

2, There is hot exhaust gas inside the flue.

3. The pipe is schedule 40-80.

I don't think any kind of a light could will to do any damage

My wife claims that I vent gas all the time:grin:

2, There is hot exhaust gas inside the flue.

It can't be very hot otherwise the pipe will eventually sag, bend, even separate. That pipe softens at similar temperature as electrical PVC.

I thought DWV was only allowed in applications where the exhaust temp was at dew point or less.

Dew point depends on humidity and pressure. It generally is lower than temp required to bend the PVC pipe, but given the right conditions could be higher.

These pipes get warm to the touch but not much more if it is a high efficiencey WH. If not, all bets are off.

They get hotter than that where they pass through an attic on hot summer days.

I can't say ive seen problems before on a gas appliance PVC vent, probably because the appliance will have combustion trouble before things get too far out of hand and shut down because of safety devices.

But I have seen horizontal runs of sewer PVC vent pipes that have little support sag from heat in a hot attic, the sagging pipe creates a 'trap' in the line and rainwater and condensation eventually fill the 'trap' and cause ventilation problems and it can also freeze when it gets cold and break the pipe and then they wonder where the water stain on the ceiling is coming from.
