2006 NEC states ( I Believe ) that any outlet within 6' of a sink edge needs to be GFCI protected, NO EXCEPTIONS. Does this include any outlets that might be under the sink (disposal) or above the sink ( wall clock ) outlet for washer dryer ( if outlet is within 6' of laundry tub ) ? Thanks

I'm not very familar with the 2006 code. But if you look in the '05 or '08 in section 210.8(A) you might be able to find your answer:)
 
IIRC, the only NEC reference there ever was had to do with placement of a receptacle near the laundry sink. There was never a general NEC rule on the topic. Since then, both receptacle rules and GFCI rules have undergone an extreme amount of revision.

However - keeping in mind our northern cousins - I am given to understand that the Canadian code actually does have such a rule.
 
The 2005 does not require GFCI within 6' off all sinks only those specifically mentioned.

(6)Kitchens ? where the receptacles are installed to serve the countertop surfaces

(7)Laundry, utility, and wet bar sinks ? where the receptacles are installed within 1.8 m (6 ft) of the outside edge of the sink See related ROP ROC


In the 2011 code they specify all sinks other than those in a kitchen.

If this is a residental dwelling kitchen then only the receptacles serving the countertop requires GFCI protection.

Thanks for the quick reply...I should have read the code closer. Still a little confused with the outlet that serves the washer/dryer. If that outlet is within 6' of any type of sink, it must be GFIC protected, even if that outlet is behind the washer/dryer?
 
The 2011 also has an exception that receptacles within 6' of a sink in patient bed locations of general care or critical care areas of health care facilities shall not be required to have GFCI protection.

They probably don't want to have an oxygen pump or something plugged into it and have it trip :roll:
