I have an upcoming service upgrade to do so I was browsing through the 2010 PG&E green book today and noticed the following:

GreenBook said:
5.3.2. Prohibited Meter Locations

The following locations are not acceptable for electric meters.

F. Garages for single-family residences.

I've been installing them in garages without any problems for years. I don't recall seeing this before.

Is this new? Anyone in SF been prevented from installing a meter in a garage?

Part of the reason may be that the houses were originally constructed with the electrical equipment in the garage way back when. Also your typical 'row house' there doesn't have a lot of frontage space for electrical equipment.

The service I'm working on is coming in from the backyard so I may be stuck with a meter outside.

I pulled an old 2002 Green Book from another vehicle and the text is a little different:

Tomorrow I am going to install a new 200 amp service in a agrage in SF. The PG&E rep was on site and saw the proposed location, he didn't have a problem with it. The electrical inspector was fine with it as well.
