although my background was commercial i started out doing residential and service call, now i am starting doing small commercial work. My question is do you mark up the material or not. By the way i am using conest

You have to mark up large and small jobs, i think of my self as a not to bad of a guess-to-mater on the small type jobs I do. BUT , if you dont crawl in ever hole, attic or lift out every ceiling tile.. check soil compaction... you have to estimate.
Part of estimating is missing things that cant be seen...." wow i only need threadless rigid connector to make this work"..yeah 32 bucks later it works. none of us are perfect ... material cost change change rapidly.... not to mention wire cost. The risk are even higher the bigger the job. You are not the perfect estimator so you have to be able to cover real cost and on the jobs you hit right on the nose... its a bonus !

Yes you mark up materials.
That's how you cover you labor risks.
The higher the material/labor ratio on a job, the less markup I have to put on a job to cover my labor risk.
