Time clocks in stairwell

Yeah there could be building codes against it.

In some types of stairways you cannot have any items in the stairway not related to the stairway.

In other spots you might be impeding the required width.

I don't know where it is in the building code or how it's worded, but I don't believe it's exclusive to stairwells. I think it deals more with the 'means of egress', which most if not all stairwells are.

If we were allowed to run conduits and cables (and install equipment) in stairwells think of how crowded they'd get. Nobody would breakout the core boring machines when there's a wide open chase from basement to penthouse.

H'mm guess I'm thinking of the type you punch when going on shift or off???

Thought those were called timers:confused:

My thoughts also. If it is an employee clock for keeping track of work time there could be ADA violations with locating it in a stairwell.

If it is a wall switch timer controlling the stairwell lighting, it is not foreign to the stairwell.

If it controls something outside the stairwell and the stairwell is a public access area why would you want it there in the first place?

Here is what I found for stairways.

IBC 1009.11.7 Stairway projections. Projections into the required width at each handrail shall not exceed 4.5 inches (114 mm) at or below the handrail height. Projections into the required width shall not be limited above the minimum headroom height required in Section 1009.2.

IBC 1009.2 Headroom. Stairways shall have a minimum headroom clearance of 80 inches (2032 mm) measured vertically from a line connecting the edge of the nosings. Such headroom shall be continuous above the stairway to the point where the line intersects the landing below, one tread depth beyond the bottom riser. The minimum clearance shall be maintained the full width of the stairway and landing.

I can think of quite a few plants that have the time clock stations on the stairwell landings, at each level.

It's in many ways an ideal location. The clocks, and their associated card racks, are outside of the dirty / wet production environment, yet as close to the 'point of work' as practical. They also have the effect of there being many 'small' time stations, rather than one monster at the building entrance.

Also look in the IBC under "vertical exit enclosures". 1020.1.2 in the 2006 IBC.

"Penetrations into... an exit enclosure are prohibited except for required exit doors, equipment and ductwork ..., and electrical raceways for fire dept. communication, and electrical raceway serving the exit enclosure."

So you can't have any branch circuits or feeders passing through a stairway.

I'd also look at 1018.1. If you have people lining up to punch a time clock, you are interfering with the use of the stair as an exit.
