Does anyone here charge a seperate fuel cost if the work is out of the immediate area? I've got a job that's 90miles round trip. Just wondering how others handle fuel.Is it figured as part of the hourly rate or in addition to? Truck gets 8-9mpg, job will be 7 trips total. Does anyone put an actual cents per mile type charge (covers fuel, tires, wear and tear etc.)? Thanks.
 
The job would be contracted not hourly so all the costs would be covered in the contract price we are electrical contractors not day laborers.

Our basic practice is whatever time it takes to get there plus whatever it costs us to get there. And back. Various customers have slightly different fee structures because for some it is more palatable to roll the mileage costs into the hourly rate. Some want a lower rate for travel versus actual work. We aim to please so we have about 10 different rates for different customers.

In the end, the travel time and expenses get paid by the customer somehow.

In the specific case you asked about, if it was rolled into the total contract price, we would figure 7 trips at 90 miles at 45 cents a mile for personal vehicle usage, plus 2-3 hours of time per day for the travel. This would be part of the total contract price. If there were multiple people involved, it would most likely be figured at 7 trips at 90 miles at 45 cents a mile per person.

Depending on the circumstances, the employees involved might well be encouraged to stay over night to save on mileage and travel time. They would almost certainly have that option unless the work days involved were not sequential.

I charge my usual time. It's time I'm not working elsewhere, and, even though I'm not "being productive" during that time, it covers the driving costs.
 
I usually charge 1/2 hour travel time locally, sometimes waive it if I'm already close by when called. I charge 1 hour travel 1 way for next towns over. If quoting, I add mileage cost to bid. I eat a certain amount, as I'd have to pay gas & spend time traveling if I worked a job for someone else.

My last boss added a $25 trip charge to every job.
