Hot tub

Is it o.k. to add a 220V 50A circuit for a hot tub to a 100A panel?
There are no sub panles off of the 100A main...circuits are all normal household circuits.
I am saying it is o.k. my partner thinks we need to upgrade the panel to a 200A....

You would need to perform a load calculation for the existing panel to determine if you have the capacity to serve the hot tub.
