Can a true single-voltage part winding motor be started with an RVSS starter by connecting the windings in parallel at the motor?

RVSS = Soft Start??

We just put a soft start on a 250 hp motor that had possibility of wye delta start. SS instructions indicated that we could parrallel the windings and reduce the wire size to the motor by 53%. We did not do it because the customer had 3/0 wire already, but if I understand it correctly we could have run 1/0 to each set of windings. There was a parameter that needed to be changed. We had it wrong and the SS shut us down before you could blink.

Short answer, yes you can and must. In other words you cannot just connect the soft starter to part of the windings and then bring in the rest when ramped, because generally the part that you connect to will provide insufficient torque to accelerate the motor when used with a soft starter.
