I have a dell laptop and my wife has a Mac laptop. IMO, the Mac battery is better but I bet you can buy different quality batteries. The Mac battery seems to have a longer life between charges.

The one that fits your laptop and has more cells (amphours)

Wrong answer.

The one that was made for your laptop, period.

Google laptop fires. The Li-ion batteries are flammable. Replacement with the wrong battery can be a real fire hazard. You Tube if full of videos of burning laptops. The battery has to be matched to the charger in the laptop AND be of high quality design and construction.

I have a Dell and the battery it came with had like a 4 hour charge. When it died, I replaced it with a 8 hour one from Dell. Right now it says " 90% 6Hr. 55 Min Remaining".

Do both computers put the same load on the batteries?

It may be that the Mac is more energy efficient.

I don't know but Derek seems to have answered the question about different quality batteries that available for a specific laptop. Perhaps the Mac battery I have is a better quality but the better quality dell may be just as efficient. IDK.

How do you get that?
Wasn't it a major manuf. that had the fires and recall?
I would bet that most if not all name brands are made by 3-4 small manuf..
Like Hioki meters, they make brand labeled meters, ie. Sperry, Amprobe.
How about mother boards with bad caps. that all were made by 1-2 small manuf. yet most if not all big name board manuf. had them on some of the boards they make.
Or hamburgers, frozen or fresh

The recall was for Dell and very few of them were returned. That was several years ago.

Now my concern would be cheap replacement batteries. If you stay with OEM (after checking for recalls) you should be good.

Years ago we had a seminar about re-chargeable batteries. It was given by the president of Harding Energy, a company that makes and tests re-chargeable batteries. It was there we learned about the hazards of Li batteries. The company also learned a few new things about a year later. They were testing Li batteries in the lab and one of the batteries caught fire. The fire destroyed the lab. The lab was about a mile from where I was living at the time.

The technology is changing from Li-ion to Li-polymer. Lipo's are touted to be safer, but that is conjecture.

Here is a video of a Lipo being mechanically damaged and catching fire.

Lithium batteries will be much sought after due to their light weight. They are hazardous and potentially dangerous. Most of the problems have been swept under the carpet.

Whether they ignite from overcharging, mechanical damage or from an other ignition source, Li batteries are nearly as flammable as gunpowder. There are dozens of videos on YouTube that show burning Li batteries, most of them are Lipos.

The risk is far overshadowed by their performance. For instance, a Lipo battery can run a cell phone for days. A NiMH the same size would weigh three times as much and you would be lucky to get a day's use out of the phone.

Lithium is flammable. That doesn't mean it can't be used safely, but we still need to be aware of it's potential to cause or contribute to a fire.
