The golf range has a ball washer the motor is plugged into a twenty amp GFI..they say it has been running for years..all of a sudden it keeps tripping the GFI, we changed to a new one..still trips the GFI..plug it into a 110 grounded recp, it works fine..any idea what is causing the problem?? and how to fix it??

Does the GFI hold without the bal lwasher plugged in to it? If it does hold, you have a problem with the ball washer.
Replace the ballwasher.

all the GFCI needs to trip is >4mA to trip. As suggested check the GFCI with a different load and if it doesn't trip then it is the ball washer.

I never knew that they make ball washers.

I recently attended a training seminar at UL. They spent some time talking about GFCI's and the concerns about nuisance tripping. Their claim is that the new technology used in GFCI's should eliminate almost all nusiance tripping. If you are getting nuisance trips you may have leakage from the appliance and it should be replaced.
