LoVo in wall below grid ceiling to be in conduit?

I've always been instructed to sleeve lo vo cables in conduit from a box in the wall to the exposed ceiling.Is that just a preference,or a code issue.We're talking South Florida here,so,anything's possible.

Generally that is done for the telephone people. This way they can pull they wires and add new ones if they need. Around here they want a 3/4" emt sleeve to the ceiling.

Not a code requirment except for power limited fire alarm has to be protected to 7ft above the floor.
