Is it bad practice or illegal to install a single phase 120/240 volt genertor in a building with a three phase 120/208 service. I have a doctors clinic that wants emergency power for there fridge and freezer that stores vacines and medications. The Generator would be small 8kw would be more than enough. I believe it would be covered under optional stanby systems art 702. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Not looking up any thing, I would say go for it; move loads to a 1phase panel and feed that panel.

I would install a siemans or ch panel with the appropriate manual transfer device and relocate the emergency loads within that panel . I have done this a few times in the past and it works real nicely.

Yes you can do it. Yes it is an optional standby system, so I would not let the word "emergency" come into any conversations or other communications. Call it a "backup generator," not an "emergency generator." And I would suggest an automatic transfer switch, as opposed to a manual one, in case the power loss happens during non-working hours.

With the OP mentioning an 8k generator, which is Generac's smallest NG generator that comes with ATS I have used a few of these to do spot backup for critical back up on a few places, from fridg's/ freezers to sumps, and gated entrances. just keep in mind that you are not allowed to ATS into more load then the generator can handle, I see no problem with bringing out the circuits to the loads into another small panel and putting the ATS between it and the supply breaker to the panel.

Because this is a dotors clinic, I will say going with a ATS instead of a manual transfer, is the better way since no one will have to run back down to the clinic after hours if the power fails.

I've done a couple like that with no issues, I thought I might have to do a buck/boost transformer for the voltage sense circuitry, due to the utility being 208, and the transferswitch set up for 240, but it works fine with the exsisting voltages, at least with the Generac units.
