Residential Tract Utility Responsibility

Hello all, newbie question for you guys. I have searched, but did not find the "norm" on this.
If you are an EC bidding on a residential tract housing project (150+ homes, 150a-200a service) do you bid on the utility trenching and conduit? My experience is mostly commercial and we "allow" for a 5' stub from the property line then give an alternate to complete the utility trenching with empty conduit. So, whats the expected format the GC would like to see on the electrical proposal regarding the utility trenching and/or tie in? Thanks for the info

I usually state in my bid that it is not included and let the GC respond. Down here in florida the POCO usually does it. If not the POCO then a underground or utility contractor will install. But in this crazy economy with volume so low I have been under pressure to install when its only 1 or 2 at a time.
Good Luck!

You need to talk to the PoCo and find out their requirements.

Chances are, YOU will be required to dig and pipe from the houses to the transformer pad; YOU will have to set the pad; YOU will have to run pipe from the transformer to and up the pole at least 10', AND leave another piece of pipe there for them to use when they pull the wires. You'll also be expected to call them at various stages, so they can inspect your trench and fill.

Ditto for the phone company.

Every POCO Different

Every POCO Different

I have worked in several utilities and every POCO is different. Some have the EC install everything, even the padmount transformers and medium-voltage cables. Others ask only for a conduit to the meter socket. Others want the wire to the transformer. Some want everything in conduit, some direct bury the wire. You need to meet with the local utility estimater/staker and get the low down.

Utility Standards

Utility Standards

The utility has installation standards that are easy to get.
They also have installations engineering standards that are more detailed and harder to get. Those standards show how they want all the equipment and cable installed. Drawings that show details for cable installation, transformers, switches, circuiting, transfromer sizing etc. etc.
