I installed some 4 inch mr16 recessed cans in a closet. At the time the rough in was done there was not supposed to be any kind of shelving installed near the cans. Well architect/ homeowners decided to add shelves now. These are built in so not very easy to remove. Article 410.16 c 5 states that flourescents and LEDS can be installed in the closet storage space where identified for this use. So my question is do the make a mr16 bulb that is LED and identified for this use.

Then why do you need a LED bulb?

410.16 Luminaires in Clothes Closets.
(A) Luminaire Types Permitted. Only luminaires of the
following types shall be permitted in a closet:
(1) Surface-mounted or recessed incandescent or LED luminaires
with completely enclosed light sources.

(3) 150 mm (6 in.) for recessed incandescent or LED luminaires
with a completely enclosed light source installed
in the wall or the ceiling.

Because I do not have 6 inches of clearance.

(5) Surface-mounted fluorescent or LED luminaires shall
be permitted to be installed within the closet storage
space where identified for this use.

I take this as meaning you may install the fixture with in the 6 inch of clearance as long as the bulb/fixture is rated for it.
 
Have installed many can lights in clothes closets with shower trims. The enclosed shower

trim limits you to a 40 watt A lamp using Halo H7ICTNB can & shower trim. Clearances were

always met because the closet was a big walkin closet. If your can layout is such that you

can't meet the clearance requirements, thats a big oops. What is your plan B ? What was

the original purpose of this closet if not for clothes ? If this closet is adjacent to the kitchen

it's a pantry.

Yup. And since this is a 4" can, you'll need to turn to that manufacturer to see if they offer an LED trim listed for installation within the "storage space".
 
A big oops on the Architect and home owners. The can lay out was fine before the decided to add built in shelves in the closet directly under the cans. The closet has a big arch way in the middle they did not want lighting in it which only left a space close to the wall on each side of the closet. They were not going to put shelves there. There is no way to move the cans.

My solution is hopefully what I am trying to figure out here.

Maybe. I doubt any fixture is listed as such. The bulb is irrelevant, the fixture must be rated.
 
410.16(c)(5) is to cover clothes hanging rods that have an integral light fixture. The closet storage space exists whether there is shelving or not. This rule only applies to CLOTHES closets.
