Went to look at a job yesterday to wire a Heater for an existing in ground pool. While looking at the Heater area I noticed that the metal conduits and 3/4" Rigid ground have, in my opinion, a greater amount of rust and corrosion than normal.

I would be interested in hearing others thoughts as to the cause.

The localized nature of the corrosion leads me to suspect that the pipes were, until recently, buried. Under gravel, dirt, loose pool chemicals - no matter what. Winter frost heave, perhaps?

If my suspicion is correct, once you dig down about a foot you will find pipe in much better condition. Pipe exiting the ground is exactly the circumstance where pipe-wrap tape really makes a difference.

The pool chemicals was my first thought as well. I did not have all of my tools with me at the onset so I could not check but could stray voltage in the ground contribute to the rapid degradation?
