there recently has been a couple of problems where there has been a loss of a plc card or two.
1.should plc have tvss install @ the 120v feed for the slc 500 ?

2. what about the use of veresistors on the field devices like actuators that use solenoids to send air into valve to open up and then send a feed back signal to plc ?

I do not have any plc knowledge just some ideas that i am not sure of. If there is something to add that might help please let me know.

More than likely the problem is at the load and not the line. Yes, Varistors or diodes at the devices help with inductive loads.
How about more info; what type of card is burning out? what load connected? Ratings ok? It could be a number of things besides the card.
