Hi,
New to the forum and would love some advice on pricing a generator. Just wondering how much the guys around here charge, price points, labor, supplies, and anything else that's included within the bid. I would like some kind of outline to go by and basic charges that are applied.
Pretty generic and vague question! So any help would be appreciated. I want to be fair to the customer and of course myself.

Thanks!!
Andrew:thumbsup:

You are correct generic and vague. So many variables. What Kw, ATS or man. switch, will riggers need to be involved setting the unit, who dose the pad, who supplies the gen.
The last small 15Kw I did came in around $7K but did not include gas line or regulators and it was a new construction home I was wireing anyway.

Welcome to the forum. It's going to be difficult to estimate pricing for you. First off, we don't know where "around here" is:happyno:. But, here in NJ prices will vary significantly from county to county. As others have mentioned you'll first have to determine what size generator you'll need. After that you'll need to determine the following :
  • Are you installing an ATS? If so what size? Are you transferring the whole service or selected circuits?
  • How much work will YOU have to do to completely install the generator
  • Are you going to be the GC and include the cost for plumbing?
  • Are you going to file and include the prices for permits?
  • Who is setting the generator?
  • Are you pouring a pad or setting it on crushed stone?

Determine how much work you'll have to do and how much you want to make before doing the work. Don't go by what the "going price" in your area is. What I mean is, if you're going to end up making $50.00 after doing all the work, why bother. If other guys are installing gen sets for a lot less than you, either find out what they are doing to allow them to install for less or don't do the install.

And, this is one of the most important tips I can I can give you (from the voice of experience) - make sure you have the permits approved by the municipality and in your hands before starting any work. I recently installed a home generator for a customer who just spent $$$$$$ to repair his basement after getting flooded. He was in a panic and a rush to get it installed before the next big rain and power outage. I anticipated that the township would approve the permit and installed the gen set. Well, as it turned out the town didn't approve the location because the unit was less than 15' away from his property line. He had to file for a variance (which he would have had to do anyway) and I now have to appear with him before the board.

BTW, it will be worth it. He was the hit of the neighborhood after a 3 day power outage due to Hurricane Irene.
