Question,
If the overcurrent device is in-sight of the A/C unit can it serve as the disconneting means?
 
I believe it can, but there is a 50 foot max distance also.

In Sight From (Within Sight From, Within Sight).
Where this Code specifies that one equipment shall be ?in
sight from,? ?within sight from,? or ?within sight of,? and
so forth, another equipment, the specified equipment is to
be visible and not more than 15 m (50 ft) distant from the
other.

What if it a split unit? If you have the air handler in the basement and is within sight of the panel and the other part is outside. I believe in this case you would still need the disconnect outside.
