ok... i've got a fluke 87 that was giving me display fits, missing characters,
segments of numbers, etc.

i found a fix online for it, i believe it will work for any 80 series fluke DMM.

open up the case... 3 screws on the back.
separate case halves, remove battery.
remove single screw holding inner housings on circuit board...
carefully remove bezel from around LCD display
remove the back inner housing, separating the power connection from the LCD
flex the four clips on the front inner housing, separating it from the circuit board
remove the lcd from the top inner housing.....

now the fix... lightly run a pencil eraser across the flexible connectors top and
bottom of the LCD. run pencil eraser across the connection tabs on the PCB,
two strips of them....

snap everything back together, with a new battery.

voila! works like new again. check it against a trusted meter to make sure
you didn't bump any of the calibration pots....

takes about 10 minutes to do

I think Fluke has a lifetime warranty, I sent an 87III back years ago, and they fixed it for free. I believe the supply house I bought it from sent it back for me. I have two more laying in a tool box at my shop that I need to send back, but I mainly use my 289 now. They even put a new cover on it.

but look at how Fluke defines lifetime;
Lifetime is defined as seven years after Fluke discontinues manufacturing the product, but the warranty period shall be at least ten years from date of purchase. *(Lifetime Warranty applies to products manufactured after October 1996). The warranty does not cover manuals, fuses, disposable batteries, damage from neglect, misuse, contamination, alteration, accident or abnormal conditions of operation or handling, including failures caused by use outside of the product's specifications, or normal wear and tear of mechanical components. This warranty covers the original purchaser only and is not transferable. This warranty covers the LCD for 10 years only (state-of-the-art for LCDs). To establish original ownership proof of purchase is required (20, 70, 80, 170, 180 and 280 models).

Fluke Repairs

I have found Fluke to be very easy and forgiving to deal with for repairs. I recently had an inoperative expensive telephone butt set. I was at least 10 years old. I called for a repair tag, I sent it in. They indicated they would contact me with charges. Turns out it was the subject of a recall years earlier (not a safety issue) and they sent me a replacement at no charge. Over the years I have sent numerous items to them and the experience has always been good. Kind of helps make me a big fan of Fluke.
Thats interesting about the 87 display. I have a couple of them (87 V) and they have not done that. Good to know.

Okay, I have to do my ethical duty as a safety professional and ask why are we repairing the meters ourselves and not leaving the repair/maintenance up to a qualified person like the Fluke manuals state?

Though, the "fix" as stated in this post doesn't seem like a big deal, I could see some serious consequences if the meter was not repaired back to OEM specs.

Carry on. :D

we are repairing them ourselves to save money. the fluke fee to service the
meter is about what the meter is worth. you didn't get that notice that many
of us, we be 'po folks now?

didn't i *say* not to touch the little adjustment thingies, and stuff?
and check it against a known good meter....?

i think fluke charges something like $35 bucks to calibrate the meter...
money well spent after doing "enhanced cleaning".....

but then again, you are talking to someone who at age 15 decided it'd
be cool to do a valve job, on his fathers car..... dad came walking out,
just as i cranked it over to pop the heads loose..... i hadn't actually
bothered to ask his permission....

i survived what happened next. possible electrocution would be trivial
compared to it.

but the car ran good when i was done.... also put on a Q-Jet, and a
chet hebert cam.... i didn't ask about those either..... the original
cam looked "worn".... so i put one in with prettier bumps.... and
the original 2 barrel carb was dirty, so i replaced that.....
