I have a friend who wants me to install some energy monitoring equipment inside the breaker box of a house he's building. Specifically, he'd like to be able to measure the total current entering the main panel using snap-on current transformers (CT), and then have smaller CT's to measure individual circuits like the dryer, heater, kitchen, etc. I know there are commercial CT/datalogger options available as well as some built-it-yourself loggers to record the voltage from the CT's, but I'm wondering if there are any known code violations regarding clamping current transformers to various lines inside the breaker box for long term monitoring.

A panelboard is installed in a cabinet.

Cabinets are covered in Article 312, I don't know of any section in 312 that would prohibit CTs in a cabinet.
