While looking to purchase some different tools, I stumbled upon a fluorescent (t12/8/5) tester that is ALSO a ballast tester. It's made by milwaukee, model 2210-20 and just wanted to know experience before I find/purchase.

Thanks

200 bucks and a Milwaukee tester? I gotta think about this.

I own a couple of their meters and have been happy with them thus far, as well as nearly every other m12/18/28 tool. When I stumbled upon this, I was surprised that I have NEVER heard about it. I don't even recall seeing it ever pop up on Milwaukees website. And I still can't find any real world reviews on it, which I would prefer before buying.

DOH! I just found it on their website...
Available February 2012

But I see websites listing it for sale....

BP, I'll take the opposite tack .... if the ballast is good, it must be the bulb :)

I haven't seen anything better than the screw-in testers, whose indicator lights tell you not only if the ballast is bad, but what part of the ballast.

The 'bulb tester' I have is not very helpful.

Considering the PITA it is to get up to the fixture, you might as well take everything up with you - AND have a helper on the radio back at the panel, flipping breakers. Code or not, there's a real advantage to having a disconnecting means at the fixture- especially if the power has two hot legs.

HID is a bit more quirky than other lighting types, so I have found it wise to be systematic, from the very start. One can easily write pages on the topic- but the first issue is to verify that there is the right power getting to the fixture.
