Conduits through stairs

Can you route exposed conduits through stairs to serve a pump in another room?

Going on memory only. I ca't remember if this is an NEC code or a life safety code, but only conduits feeding loads (lighting, recepts) in a code required egress stairwell are allowed. So, if you are referencing a fire stairwell, then no.
