charlie:

Sorry I did not provide more information.

This is a video of small experimental electrically powered robotic helicopters with internal sensors and computational power to do some very interesting operations.

The size is in the range of 1 # and can be held in your hand.

They are able to sense the environment around them, fly from point A to B without hitting obstructions, build structures, and fly in formation.

First, is shown a single helicopter and some of its capability, then multiple helicopters are shown working together.

I believe these are given generalized instructions of what to do (fly from A to B but no other information) (build a structure of some shape with beams) (work together to move something too heavy for one helicopter). From a remote point these helicopters are not being commanded during the execution of their flight. Nor are the details of every motion of the flight preprogrammed. These are intelligent machines to some extent.

In the future you might have one of these as an assistant. You are up on a ladder and you drop your screwdriver. So you command your assistant to fly down, pickup the screwdriver, and bring it to you.

Most interesting/promising/frightening part:

Independent autonomy with integrated coordinated actions with other units.

Did anyone read Prey by Michael Crichton? Same concept as in the book, but the devices were much more advanced in the book.

I listened to it on tape while making an 8 hr road trip back from ND. I usually have problems with drowsiness after an hour or two. Rural highways, at night, not seeing another vehicle for a couple hours at a time...NOT sleepy that trip.
