Does a large health club need a full fire alarm if it is sprinklered?

I know that many types of buildings do not need a full fire alarm system if they are sprinklered (like small offices, retail, etc). But other types (like churches, hospitals, etc) need full fire alarm systems even if they are sprinklered. What about a 20,000 health club?

20000 what? Square foot? Rated occupancy? Number of treadmills?


What building code governs?
What occupancy classification is it?
What does local codes show?
What does the FD say? (most important place to check most likely. Ask hypothetical questions, you don't have to mention the actual location)

You will probably have to install notification throughout if it's a place of assembly. RTU's over 2000 CFM probably need duct smokes. Spot smokes in a few other locations....but check all the above first

Technically an engineer is supposed to make the classification, but. I know better:

2012 IBC
303.4 Assembly Group A-3.
Assembly uses intended for worship, recreation or amusement and other assembly uses not classified elsewhere in Group A including, but not limited to:

Amusement arcades
Art galleries
Bowling alleys
Community halls
Courtrooms
Dance halls (not including food or drink consumption)
Exhibition halls
Funeral parlors
Gymnasiums (without spectator seating)
Indoor swimming pools (without spectator seating)
Indoor tennis courts (without spectator seating)
Lecture halls
Libraries
Museums
Places of religious worship
Pool and billiard parlors
Waiting areas in transportation

If your using the IBC 2012 it would just need horn ans strobes uless the occupancy was over a thousand then they would need voice/alarm communication.

[F] 907.2.1 Group A.
A manual fire alarm system that activates the occupant notification system in accordance with Section 907.5 shall be installed in Group A occupancies where the occupant load due to the assembly occupancy is 300 or more. Group A occupancies not separated from one another in accordance with Section 707.3.9 shall be considered as a single occupancy for the purposes of applying this section. Portions of Group E occupancies occupied for assembly purposes shall be provided with a fire alarm system as required for the Group E occupancy.

Exception: Manual fire alarm boxes are not required where the building is equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system installed in accordance with Section 903.3.1.1 and the occupant notification appliances will activate throughout the notification zones upon sprinkler waterflow.
